Thanks for posting Pat. I heard the news from my close friend and fellow F-106 nut Mark Harlin today of the passing of Col. Rogers. Mark has spent a considerable time with the Colonel over the past few years as a personal friend and told me he last saw Joe the morning he passed. Mark told me that when he saw him on Thursday evening,as bad as he looked, Joe told him he was happy to be alive. This has really affected Mark a lot - well, all of us I guess - but the message I got from Mark was that Joe went out happy, he was loved (his son, Joe, Jr. was there) and wanted to be remembered as someone who did good things.
I hope there will be more than a passing mention of his death in aviation and USAF circles. I'd like to ask all F-106 alumni who read this to e-mail the Air Force Times historian and columnist Robert F. Dorr to do a story on Col. Rogers. His e-mail (as published weekly in Air Force Times) is
robert.f.dorr@cox.net
Let's encourage him to write one hell of a story on the holder of the single-engine speed record!
Thanks to all and may God bless Col. Rogers and his family.

This is the first and only message I have received about Col. Joe Rogers and I'm not clear on who sent it. (Please include the sender's full name when you write to me). I know a little about Col. Rogers and his achievements and interviewed him on the phone in the past. I would be happy to write an appreciation of his life for Air Force Times. However, I will need help from someone who can provide basic biographic information. When and where was he born? What was his flying class number? What year did he retire? When and where did he die, and what was the cause? Who is Pat? Who is Mark Harlin? Who is Jim G.? Is there a family member I can talk to? Since your message (below) is the only one I've seen, what was in the others?
If Col. Rogers died within the last few days, I would want to get an article on him in print in the next Air Force Times. That means a deadline of noon on Saturday.
Please contact me, preferably by phone, as soon as possible---but not tonight (Monday) because I'm going to bed early. If you want to help me write about Col. Rogers, share this message with as many friends and family members as you can and recognize that it is urgent.
Thanks for belatedly sharing this sad news with me. And for God's sake, when I die, please tell people that I died, not that I "passed."
Best wishes,
Bob Dorr
OK SEE WHAT YOU GUYS CAN DO WITH THIS.............ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU THAT KNEW HIM PERSONALLY OR SERVED WITH HIM...........GET ON IT, MARK YOU STARTED IT........DON'T DROP THE BALL.....The Old Sarge

Thanks guys! I just got in from work and got the e-mails from Jim G. and Bob Dorr. I zapped an e-mail off to Bob Dorr and I called Mark Harlin and gave him the details. Mark will pass the info onto Joe Jr. (Col Rogers son) and Mark told me he was pretty sure Joe Jr. would be able to help Bob.
Hope that makes sense!
I hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew but it sounds like Bob is more than happy to help. (Which is GREAT!!)

Google has about 70 hits on Col. Joe Rogers. Mostly about the Six display at Santa Rosa and his days with the SR-71 Test Program. Not much biographical data.

Our administrator at the McChord Air Museum just called and passed on news about Joe’s passing. A very sad day for all of us.
I was very fortunate to have met Joe almost six years ago at McChord. I was working on a display for the Museum on 56-0459 so I went right the source, Joe Rogers. Later on, I found out that Joe was planning visit McChord during the 8th Fighter Wing Reunion being held at the Base. Being the Crew Chief of -0459 at the Museum, I wanted Joe to see her in all of her glory. We spent a few weeks cleaning, polishing and painting “his old girl” (as he called her many times); we even partially restored her cockpit and replaced her blue painted canopy and windscreen with clear new glass. She looked great, best thing was the genuine appreciation that Joe had for -459 and the work we did. After that day I kept in touch with Joe, even staying at his house on two occasions.
I finished the display; it grew from a display for -459, to a tribute to a great aviator and an even greater man. I can not express the sadness I have hearing his passing – as anyone can tell you who has had the pleasure of meeting Joe – even for a few minutes, he will be greatly missed.

I concur with the forum – Joe deserves a store in the Air Force Times. I have posted a biography on Joe on our website that I wrote (and Joe approved) for his display at our Museum, It can be found at the address below.
Unfortunately, I am unable to update our website at the time, but I can assure you we will have a very fitting tribute to “Mr. F-106”, Joe Rogers very soon.

Just finished reading Col. Rogers Obiturary in the S.F. Chronicle. Much of it reflects what has been said on this site the last few days and in fact makes reference to this site. There may be a little extra traffic from the Bay Area on this site because of the article. I hope that will mean more folks will see how great the '6 was. Col. Rogers will be remembered as a truely great aviator.
